Delightfully centered at a hotel perched above the sun-kissed Mediterranean, just half an hour’s drive from one of Europe’s biggest genre hubs, Barcelona.
SITGES International Fantastic Film Festival has carved out a reputation as Europe’s biggest and most vibrant genre fest. With a solid experience, the Sitges Festival is a stimulating universe of encounters, exhibitions, presentations and screenings of fantasy films from all over the world.
The 42nd edition opened with “Rec 2,” from Catalan locals Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza.
This year the Festival had a lot of zombie fare, a collection of comedies and a renaissance of sci-fi.
Sitges’ 42nd edition, which ran from Oct.1-12 was starred with genre-blenders and films that mixed horror and humor.
Abigail Breslin, Emma Stone, Ruben Fleischer, and Jesse Eisenber, presenting ‘Zombieland’, were present at the ceremony and at a special press photo-call.

Highlights included Jamie Campbell, who attended the Festival October 3rd promoting the Twilight Saga-New Moon.
He was probably one of the kindest stars handing out autographs and talking the the fans.
When asked if he was ready for the inevitable fame and fandom he’ll soon be faced with, the 20-year-old said: -I do not consider myself a celebrity and I do not understand what is going on. It is an honor that people want to take pictures with me and ask me for autographs.

Duncan Jones’ sci-fi tale “Moon” swept the 42nd Sitges Film Festival, getting the Best Feature Film Award of Sitges 09.
Rockwell carries the movie — he’s essentially its only actor. If nothing else, says director Duncan Jones, the film will delight Sam Rockwell fans — it’s all him.
For his part, Rockwell says those fans will recognize Moon as the sort of audacious project that has mainly defined his career.
Sam Rockwell and screenplay writer Nathan Parker were present to receive the award.

Better known for his role as Alex DeLarge in A Clockwork Orange (1971), Malcom McDowell got The Grand Honorary Award, in recognition for his career, at the Sitges 09 opening gala, October 1st.
Malcolm also attended a press photo-call at the 42nd Sitges Film Festival on October 2, 2009 in Barcelona, Spain.
Never Apologize, Malcolm McDowell’s one man show and tribute to the legendary Director and Poet, Lindsay Anderson, is an incredible treat for anyone who enjoys comedy, emotion, and spectacular story-telling. Malcolm’s energy and wit on stage is infectious and unstoppable.

Orphan also got its big Spain debut at the Festival.
The film, which opened July 24th has been controversial.
ORPHAN is a back to basics ‘killer kid’ horror movie with a first-rate ‘family in jeopardy’ set-up. While the story sounds familiar, the handling of it is not. Director Jaume Collet-Serra and screenwriter David Johnson may surprise you with an impressive unexpected twist.

Wrappping up the event, Viggo Mortensen accepted an honorary prize for “The Road” during fest’s closing ceremony.
“The Road” was photographed by Spaniard Javier Aguirresarobe, one of the most respected directors of photography in Spain, who made the big leap to Hollywood to shoot this film with a devastating atmosphere full of smoke and enebrosity.
