42nd Sitges Film Festival (1-12 October)

Sue Daniels @ November 8, 2009

Delightfully centered at a hotel perched above the sun-kissed Mediterranean, just half an hour’s drive from one of Europe’s biggest genre hubs, Barcelona.

SITGES International Fantastic Film Festival has carved out a reputation as Europe’s biggest and most vibrant genre fest. With a solid experience, the Sitges Festival is a stimulating universe of encounters, exhibitions, presentations and screenings of fantasy films from all over the world.

The 42nd edition opened with “Rec 2,” from Catalan locals Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza.

11x17 Signed Posters      This year the Festival had a lot of zombie fare, a collection of comedies and a renaissance of sci-fi.

Sitges’ 42nd edition, which ran from Oct.1-12 was starred with genre-blenders and films that mixed horror and humor.

Abigail Breslin, Emma Stone, Ruben Fleischer, and Jesse Eisenber, presenting ‘Zombieland’, were present at the ceremony and at a special press photo-call.

Highlights included Jamie Campbell, who attended the Festival October 3rd promoting the Twilight Saga-New Moon.

He was probably one of the kindest stars handing out autographs and talking the the fans.
When asked if he was ready for the inevitable fame and fandom he’ll soon be faced with, the 20-year-old said: -I do not consider myself a celebrity and I do not understand what is going on. It is an honor that people want to take pictures with me and ask me for autographs.

Duncan Jones’ sci-fi tale “Moon” swept the 42nd Sitges Film Festival, getting the Best Feature Film Award of Sitges 09.

Rockwell carries the movie — he’s essentially its only actor. If nothing else, says director Duncan Jones, the film will delight Sam Rockwell fans — it’s all him.

For his part, Rockwell says those fans will recognize Moon as the sort of audacious project that has mainly defined his career.

Sam Rockwell and screenplay writer Nathan Parker were present to receive the award.

Better known for his role as Alex DeLarge in A Clockwork Orange (1971), Malcom McDowell got The Grand Honorary Award, in recognition for his career, at the Sitges 09 opening gala, October 1st.

Malcolm also attended a press photo-call at the 42nd Sitges Film Festival on October 2, 2009 in Barcelona, Spain.

Never Apologize, Malcolm McDowell’s one man show and tribute to the legendary Director and Poet, Lindsay Anderson, is an incredible treat for anyone who enjoys comedy, emotion, and spectacular story-telling. Malcolm’s energy and wit on stage is infectious and unstoppable.

Orphan also got its big Spain debut at the Festival.

The film, which opened July 24th has been controversial.

ORPHAN is a back to basics ‘killer kid’ horror movie with a first-rate ‘family in jeopardy’ set-up. While the story sounds familiar, the handling of it is not. Director Jaume Collet-Serra and screenwriter David Johnson may surprise you with an impressive unexpected twist.

Wrappping up the event, Viggo Mortensen accepted an honorary prize for “The Road” during fest’s closing ceremony.

“The Road” was photographed by Spaniard Javier Aguirresarobe, one of the most respected directors of photography in Spain, who made the big leap to Hollywood to shoot this film with a devastating atmosphere full of smoke and enebrosity.

Don’t fear the end of the world. Fear what happens next.

Director Christian Alvart takes suspense into space

From the creators of the Resident Evil film franchise comes Pandorum, a terrifying thriller in which two crew members wake up on an abandoned spacecraft with no idea who they are, how long they’ve been asleep, or what their mission is.

In an interview with MTV, Pandorum producer Paul W.S. Anderson addressed comparisons between his upcoming deep-space horror flick and the granddaddy of them all, Alien. “Pandorum introduces an unexpected terror to the audience. …any buzz floating around that this is a bit like Alien, I take as a huge compliment. It is not just some Alien knock-off, though”, he insists.

Pandorum stars Dennis Quaid, the veteran actor whose credits include Dreamscape, Enemy Mine, Frequency and The Day After Tomorrow. Quaid has a stockpile of different genre films, from Innerspace to The Alamo, from Vantage Point to his latest performance as the leader of a top-secret team of soldier-heroes in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

Co-star Ben Foster, who plays Bower with awesome new space weaponry, is one that many filmgoers have come to know over the past few years. His roles have been many and varied: Angel in X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, the sociopathic henchman bent on springing his boss (Russell Crowe) in 3:10 TO YUMA and, most recently (and notably to Fango readers), the prophetic Stranger in 30 DAYS OF NIGHT.

The celestial setting ties PANDORUM into humanity’s long fascination with the limitless unknown. …“We’ve been enthralled with space since the beginning of time,” Foster notes. “God lives in space. Heaven is up there. It’s the expanse. It’s the eternal black. It’s the silence. These are primitive, basic images that we’re all born with. It’s about as isolated as you can get. What makes the genre of science fiction so incredibly scary is that the technology of man has a tendency to fail us. So, as smart as we think we are, we’re still left to our basic, fundamental instincts. There’s nothing to hide behind up there other than our own brains, and that’s really exciting to play with.”The celestial setting ties PANDORUM into humanity’s long fascination with the limitless unknown. …“We’ve been enthralled with space since the beginning of time,” Foster notes. “God lives in space. For the type of film this is and the experience it gives, Alvart really maps it out. “He’s not just shooting to shoot. He knows what he wants, and what part of the shot he wants you to do what in. Going from THE MESSENGER, where we would have a nine-minute take, to PANDORUM, where there are 74 shots in one scene—it’s a different mechanism”, actor Ben Foster notes.

If you liked Sunshine, Event Horizon, and Alien, you do not want to miss this new feature.

Movie Trivia:
Director Trademark: [Christian Alvart] [mirror shot] When we see Bower (Ben Foster) “laser” shaving in the beginning, he is reflected by three mirrors, effectively showing him four times from all angles (as well as the shaving effect). To find great autographed memorabilia signed by the cast and crew of Pandorum visit Inferisonline.com

Inglourious Basterds: You’ve never seen anything like this

11x17 Signed Posters
Filmmaking at its bravest.
Inglourious Basterds is violent, audacious, and thoroughly uninhibited, a classic Tarantino genre.
The Basterds were the number one draw at the international box office too, grossing roughly $27.5m from the UK and 21 other international territories. Tarantino enjoyed new opening weekend records in about 18 territories including France, Germany and Russia, which isn’t a bad result for a second world war fantasy. Of all Tarantino’s movies, only Pulp Fiction has crossed $100m in North America and on this showing Basterds stands a chance of becoming the second.

Relishing the broadness of his character and the awkwardness of the film’s thesis, Brad Pitt is a ostentatious gratification. His opposite, Christoph Waltz as Nazi Col. Hans Landa, is a complex creation, a charming killer who’s constantly three steps ahead of his enemies. A master with words, the actor is given many opportunities to dominate the film, verbally analyzing the whys and wherefores of his and his prey’s intentions. The tension between these two characters is the best thing in the film.

Tarantino’s singular talent has just delivered the most challenging and intellectually engaging film of his career.

Movie Trivia:
Quentin Tarantino worked on the script for almost a decade.
Quentin Tarantino started writing this movie before Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003) but could not decide on a good ending and decide to put it on hold to do Kill Bill with Uma Thurman, a project he had been mentally preparing since Pulp Fiction (1994).
