In Europe, Kate Muir from the The Times of London, categorizes Alice in Wonderland as spectacular, ‘a 3-D epic for the next generation’, but notes that ‘traditionalists may quibble with Burton’s gothic ride through the Alice books’.
In Los Angeles, papers are split in their reviews. The Hollywood Reporter calls Burton’s film ‘a fantastical romp that proves every bit as transporting as that movie about the blue people of Pandora.’ Todd McCarthy of Variety, compares the film to ‘Avatar’ and numerous other fantasy films.
The movie has its moments of delight, humor and bedazzlement. A natural fit: Burton and Depp as the key components in fiction’s most eccentric tea party, and 3D put at the service of a story offering unlimited visual possibilities.
